This spicy, rich and unique beer is bursting with chocolate and coffee malt flavours.
We’re famous for our pale and gold coloured beers at Oakham Ales, but we brew some great black beers as well and Hawse Buckler showcases just what our brewers can do in that area. Hawse Buckler (first brewed in 2006) was an excellent Black IPA a long time before the Black IPA category was even invented! Our brewers have been perfecting the recipe ever since.
Our Cask Aged beers see a lot of our brewers’ time, care and attention. The process starts with great beer being made and fermented in the usual Oakham way, then at the end of the initial fermentation we remove the the tired yeast cells from the beer and introduce fresh yeast to complete the fermentation – the process known as krausening. The beer is then racked in casks and cellared like a fine wine to allow flavours and conditioning to develop. All of our cask aged beers are aged for at least 6 weeks – usually for much longer. Hawse Buckler, for example, is aged for at least 3 months.
