Delight as new 330ml Citra bottles put on menu and tables at Gourmet Burger Kitchen

Oakham Ales have taken a major step forward in gaining a bigger national following after securing a deal with high street restaurant chain Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK).

The contract will see Oakham’s award-winning Citra golden ale sold in all 80 GBK outlets across the country, in 330ml bottles which is a new format for Oakham. It is hoped the GBK partnership will help raise awareness of Oakham’s brews and lead to further deals with other national food chains.

“We are delighted that GBK shares our passion for great-tasting real ales and is now stocking our award-winning Citra ale around the UK,” said Oakham’s managing director, Adrian Posnett.

"We pride ourselves on producing innovative beers packed with flavour and always using the highest quality ingredients and we know this is an approach shared by GBK.”



Citra was launched five years ago as Oakham’s fifth permanent beer and currently sells over one million pints per year, having surpassed the company’s best seller of the previous 23 years, Jeffrey Hudson Bitter (JHB).

Citra, with a 4.2% ABV, is a light, refreshing beer with a pungent grapefruit, lychee, and gooseberry aromas leading to a dry bitter finish, and came about after Oakham production director John Bryan discovered the hop on a research trip to the USA.

It was such a popular hit with beer lovers that it soon joined Oakham’s permanent range, and has further built its fan-base by being sold in 500ml bottles through Waitrose, Tesco and Co-operative food stores – and now the new format in GBK restaurants.

Like Citra, GBK have built up a devoted following since being launched in Battersea, south London, in 2001 by three businessmen, including world-renowned chef Peter Gordon.

Their meticulous approach to food, including handcrafted burgers and sauces made from scratch in each restaurant’s kitchen every day, make for a meeting of minds in their link-up with Oakham.

“We’re always on the lookout for new craft beers to add to our beer listing so it’s great to be able to add Citra to our menus nationwide,”
said GBK’s Head of Food, Tim Molema. “This refreshing single hop APA with lovely citrus bitterness perfectly pairs with our Blue Cheese Burger."

Oakham Ales has appointed Barking Dog Media to provide PR services and further increase the profile of the award-winning brewery.

The team at Barking Dog Media have taken over the running of Oakham’s press office to provide 24 hours a day, seven days a week support, including crisis management.

They will also support Oakham to develop a robust digital strategy and help them to create stronger digital content to have a stronger impact.
